It works by destroying a small layer of the uterus lining and can help to alleviate painful and heavy menstrual cycles. At Pearl GYN Aesthetic Gynecology, board-certified gynecologist Dr. Robert Pearl provides minimally invasive, laparoscopic endometrial ablation procedures for his Coral Springs, FL in order to restore their quality of life and help them to live more comfortably. Ideal Candidates

Endometrial ablation should not be performed on women who are beyond menopause. Also, it is not an ideal treatment option for women with the following medical conditions:

  • Disorders of the uterus or endometrium
  • Endometrial hyperplasia
  • Cancer of the uterus
  • Recent pregnancy
  • Current or recent infection of the uterus

Ideal candidates for endometrial ablation are women who are finished having children but have not entered menopause.

Treatment Options

Dr. Pearl will assess your condition and determine which technique will best give you relief while ensuring the least invasive option is chosen. The following methods are those most commonly used to perform endometrial ablation:

  • Heated fluid – Fluid is inserted into the uterus through a hysteroscope, a slender, light-transmitting device. The fluid is heated and stays in the uterus for about ten minutes, destroying the lining.
  • Electrosurgery – Using a resectoscope (a slender telescopic device) that is inserted into the uterus, Dr. Pearl will remove the endometrial lining. This method usually is done in an operating room with general anesthesia.

What to Expect

There are a few side effects that are common following an endometrial ablation procedure. The symptoms are associated with the removal of the uterine lining and not typically the result of the treatment method chosen. Some of the minor side effects are:

  • Menstrual-like cramping for the first few days
  • Thin, bloody discharge similar to a period for about 2 – 3 days after the procedure
  • Frequent urination for 24 hours
  • Nausea

Endometrial ablation, like most surgical procedures, has certain risks. There is a small risk of infection and bleeding. There is also a minor risk that the device used for your procedure could pass through your uterine wall or bowel. With some of the above-mentioned methods, there is slight risk of burns to the vagina, vulva, and bowel.
